The goal of Children’s Christian Formation at Christ Church is to help our children learn the Bible more fully, grasp their faith more deeply, and gain a tangible sense of God’s love for them. Much of the curriculum revolves around the art of storytelling and active engagement with the great stories of our faith. Additional crafts and activites will be offered each week to augment the learning of this material, but at the end of the day it is these stories of God’s relationship with humanity that we want our chindren to know.

Godly Play (Age three through First Grade)
Godly Play is a marvelous method of Christian education and spiritual direction primarily for younger children. It is widely used in Episcopal churches. The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language, parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence around them and in their lives. Godly Play is Montessori-based and uses wonderful high-quality wooden pieces to focus the children’s attention on the specialness of the story and encourage them to internalize their faith through the rhetorical questions that are part of the story-telling. A good place to learn more is www.godlyplay.com. Children in Godly Play will learn the Lord’s Prayer.

Godly Dialogue (Second Grade through Sixth Grade)
Building on the philosophy of Godly Play, Godly Dialogue allows children to build an awareness of God’s presence by engaging the stories of our Faith. Each weekly session features dialogue about topics and stories that encourage the children to examine the relationship between their lives and their faith.

Christian Formation (Second Grade)
The Second Grade curriculum is built around the Church Year and an in depth encounter and study of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. This important year of study culminates in Communion Sunday sometime in the spring. This grade will memorize the Post-Communion Prayer.

(Third Grade)
Third Graders will begin a two year study of the Bible, covering all the better known stories in chronological sequence. The Third Grade will focus entirely on the Old Testament. These children will learn the Ten Commandments and the Summary of the Law.

(Fourth Grade)
This year is part two of our Bible overview. The children will cover all the main stories of the New Testament through the Acts of the Apostles. The Fourth Grade will memorize the 23rd Psalm.

(Fifth Grade)
Our Fifth Graders will explore the history of Christianity, including selected Saints and the Reformation. This year will also include an introduction to the Christian Church and the Episcopal Church in particular, with its symbols and governance. The Children will memorize the Confession of Sin.

(Sixth Grade)
Our Sixth Graders will begin the year by formally studying what it is that we Christians (and particularly Episcopalians) believe. Having completed this they will then move on to learn about the beliefs of other Christian denominations and other world religions including Judaism, Islam, Buddism, Hinduism and more. They will memorize the Nicene Creed.

Confirmation Class
(Seventh Grade)
Seventh Grade Confirmands will take a thematic approach to studying the Bible-both Old and New Testaments. Much of their growth will be centered around applying biblical knowledge, reflection and experience to their daily lives.

(Eighth Grade)
Eighth Grade Confirmands will study the Sacraments of the Church and explore the meaning and magnitude of the Covenant they will make at their Confirmation. Much of this year revolves around decision-making, discernment, prayer and ethics.

Children’s Chapel
Children’s Chapel at Christ Church begins our Sunday worship experience. During each chapel service a story based on the lectionary is told in a way that is accessible to children and their parents and grandparents. Chapel worship also includes seasonal children’s music and prayers. Chapel is held on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM in Taylor Hall.
